Here’s where I have a BIG conflict of interest! Normally I like to place bets on who I think is gonna win the battle but it’s gonna be a REAAAAAAAL tough choice! FRIDAY NIGHT IS ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING! I got two bands in the battle that I’m rooting for, that being The Gnarly Ones and the King Beez. OOOOOOOH MAAAAAN!
I went to see The Gnarly Ones back in January at Magpie Tavern and they packed that lil bar to the gills. All the finks there just tore the floorboards up! Lotsa fast and loud surf with some real BAAAAD SAX!! I just caught The Gnarly Ones again at The Cloak and Dagger a week or two ago and they may as well get into the demolition biz because they tore the roof off the place! The Big Derboski don’t get scared very easily but I’m afraid of what The Gnarly Ones are gonna do to the Cadillac Lounge…

OH IT’S JUST THIS…
It’s a little something for YOU on The Big Derboski’s birthday so you should appreciate it! HEH! Alright so here’s the lowdown… Down at The Arcade is a little podcast I put together, sort of like the Surfphony, except when there’s breaks in the music, instead of me, ya get all sorts of pinball sounds! WAY PAST COOL! No surf to be found while yer playing pinball in Down at The Arcade but there are a couple of instrumental tracks coming from all sorts of genres like new wave, synthpop and space disko! Here’s a little quip I’ve been using to explain the experience of Down at The Arcade:
Spend the day at the arcade playing pinball. When you first get there, take a look at all the machines! It’s pretty busy so you will have to wait your turn. Later on, things start winding down and only a few people are still hanging around and playing pinball. Before you know it, it’s closing time but you gotta get one more game in!
Can you dig it? I sure as heck hope so!

DAG YO! The Big Derboski is out here wilin’ in the nuclear apocalypse! How did I get down here? Well, it’s a long story and I feel like regalin’ this old tale so grab a seat, fink, cause it’s time for a tall tale, ya dig?
OK so back in October during Count Von Derkula’s nightmare mash on the Surfphony of Derstruction B000, I crashed the party to have a good time with all the ghouls ‘n’ ghosts. Never one to turn down a brew, I accepted a drink from Mr. Mephistopheles, SATAN HIMSELF. My judgment was a bit clouded from the bloody marys that Count Von Derkula was servin’ up OK? So I downed the drink and, lemme tell you, I had one helluva hangover. Not only that but SATAN cursed the drink in order to open the gates of hell on Earth, using me as the vessel. This was documented on Episode 11 of the Surfphony of Derstruction but a little exorcising took care of that problem. That though was only one small part of the big picture though… The damage was already done even though I gave the ghouls a good ol’ heave-ho and the dawn of the earth’s destruction came to bear. I was not quite live but still alive on Episode 12 of the Big Surf to give you a low down on what was going down! All hell broke loose in Hell City and, as a professional, the Big Derboski sought to bring Surf to you finks despite the apocalypse… and here we are now!
The Big Derboski is back in the new year, THE YEAR 20XX to bring you more Surf from around the Earth, although the Earth is not what it once was… Oh no, it’s now the NUCLEAR APOCALYPSE OH MAN!

woooo I gotta say, Diamond Head has to be one of my favorite surf songs. If you were to ask me “DERK what is YOUR quintessential surf song?!” I would say Diamond Head. I’m not too keen on my music terminology but the riff is too wild and has a really chilly vibe what with all the REVERB WOOOOOOO!
Where does the name Diamond Head come from? It is the name of a volcano on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu! The name was given to the mighty volcano by 19th British Sailors who thought the calcite crystals were diamonds.
Diamond Head is also the name of a sweet HEAVY METAL band!
The Ventures got wicked big in Japan back in the early 1960’s. They even inspired the teenagers of Japan to form their own surf bands. The Surf genre went by another name, that being Eleki Boom. Two of Japan’s biggest Eleki Boom artists were Yuzo Kayama and Takeshi Terauchi. I brought some Yuzo Kayama trax to the Big Surf last month and you should def take a listen. I played some Takeshi on this show but ya know what, I play Takeshi Terauchi a lot haha… He has to be one of my favorite surf guitarists. He plays a real fast style ala Dick Dale and makes hella use of his whammy bar but also plays real clean riffs like the Ventures. SO HOW ABOUT THIS HOW ABOUT Yuzo Kayama… AND Takeshi Terauchi!! NO WAY

WOOOOOOOOO WHAT BE KOOL, FINKS, IT’S THE SURFPHONY OF DERSTRUCTION 2000 COMING AROUND FOR ANOTHER FULL MOON!! Autumn is in full swing and the Big Derboski is just chillin’ and reminiscing about the summer… AND ABOUT SURF TOO because my summer definitely consisted of the Big Surf. That don’t mean we have to stop though, hell no, The Surfphony is just gonna keep on going, playing for ya that surf from around the earth to keep ya dreaming about those summer days!
LAST MONTH WAS OCTOBER in case you have been living under a rock. October means it is Halloween! and Halloween means the Surfphony goes BEYOND THE GRAVE! Count Von Derkula took over for me on The Big Surf for the Month of October and brought a little bit of Halloween Havoc! You still got time to check it out and, YA KNOW WHAT, The Surfphony of Derstruction BOO-THOUSAND is always in season whenever yer looking for some spooky surf! Don’t be afraid!
LRIGHT, speakin’ of Count Von Derkula and his nightmare mash, he extended an invite to me and I could not pass it up. The Count would drop dead if I ditched his little to-do! Well, I did drop by and, let me tell you, that was one helluva party. Count said it would be life-changing but I thought he was exaggerating… Well, he did run with Nostradamus for a little while and has a habit of making some pretty accurate assumptions…
Some weird things have been going on since the party… I thought it was just a nasty hangover at first. Maybe I will book an appointment with my voodoo doctor and have him check it out. He has a PHD in the freaky-deaky.

OK so if you look at the song I highlighted, The Weaseltones’ Ashes to Ashes, that is because it is a really cool song. I also wanna talk about it a bit. SO a bunch of surf bands recorded covers of David Bowie tunes and made an album out of it. It’s a REALLY good album and I know a lot of people that aren’t much into surf but are into Bowie really dig this album. There’s all sorts of different surf styles in there from a sorta-western Rebel, Rebel to some high-octane surfin like The Gospel According to Tony Day. If yer askin’ yerself where to get a hold of this album, come find a link right here! The album is only a couple of coins but it’s totally worth it! It gets the Big Derboski Seal of Approval!
Another cool track that I highlighted was The Sadies’ The 3-B. The Sadies performed the music for the “Big Daddy” Ed Roth documentary, Tales of The Rat Fink.
YO I will be taking a break next month from The Surfphony. I need a little R and R ya dig?
